Wimberley, Texas

It’s no secret that Texas is one of my favorite states in the continental US. If I’m going on an impromptu trip, the odds are 50/50 I’ll end up in the Lone Star State. Some of my favorite people live there, and it is always a good time. Still when the opportunity presented itself to travel to the heart of the pandemic in early 2021, to say that I was less than enthusiastic is an understatement. Just when I had decided I was not going, a group of insurrectionists stormed the US Capitol less than 10 minutes from my home. It may seem counterintuitive to then travel to the Deep South as a means of escape ahead of the inauguration, but I had my reasons. Mainly, I didn’t believe these people would destroy their own property when Joe Biden inevitably became the President. These were the type of people that traveled away from home to do their dastardly deeds and returned to safety unscathed. Knowing that, where could be safer to wait out the dropping and picking up of the torch than the very heart of MAGA country. So on January 15, I packed my bags and headed to a little town 45 minutes outside of Austin.
I had never been to the hill country, but I knew it was significantly less crowded than my favorite city of Houston. As a city girl (in more ways than one lol), I was looking forward to being able to slow down and actually see the stars . My trip was brief but satisfactory and I can say without a doubt it was absolutely worth it.
When you decide to make your trip to Wimberley, don’t be like me. You’ll want to book well in advance of your trip. Most sites recommend booking 2 to 6 months ahead of your travel dates. The hill country is a very popular destination and has some AMAZING options for camping, glamping, tiny homes and cabins.
With less than a week of planning, I ended up choosing (read: barely finding) a cabin right on Cypress Creek. Cypress Creek Cabins is a community of 12 cabins available for short or long term stays. My trip was over a long weekend, and it seemed that most of the people in the surrounding cabins arrived and left within the same window. The cabins are pet friendly and come fully equipped with all the amenities you need. There was a full kitchenette with a small refrigerator and stove. I stocked the fridge with pre-made dinners and lots of wine from H-E-B.
The unit had a fire place but also central heating and AC. The best part was the private hot tub on the wrap around porch. Each unit has its own as well as its own grill and fire pit. I felt very comfortable not having to interact with anyone unnecessarily in the midst of the panorama.
The vibe was very rustic and a little dated but in a cute way. The simplicity was appealing. Although the cabin had two flat screen TVs and wifi, I still felt able to disconnect and relax. I never looked at the news or bothered with current events. But, I did rewatch Bridgerton for what would be the second out of 100 times.
I thoroughly enjoyed the cabin but still took some time to explore the surrounding area. Wimberley is very quaint LOOKING but has all the modern touches necessary to keep even the most citiest of girls comfortable. On the single day I spent exploring (because COVID) I enjoyed hiking at Blue Hole Regional Park and a quick outdoor lunch at Community Pizza & Beer Garden.
Overall Wimberley was giving everything they said it was supposed to gave. I genuinely felt like I was in a hallmark movie. But, like a true American, who travels willingly to a new place knowing the political climate, I’m docking a point for the amount of billboards, signs and flags of Lord Voldemort I saw lying around. Still 9/10 would recommend.
